An Intelligent Power Module (IPM) is a module that offers superior performance by incorporating a specialized drive circuit to enhance a high-speed, low-power insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) chip's capabilities. Moreover, it includes a custom IC that executes self-protection functions such as short circuit protection, supply under voltage protection, and over-temperature protection. IPM has integrated under-voltage and over-temperature lock-out protection features, which enhance system reliability. It comprises switching elements, which include Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs), Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs), and Silicon-Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs).

Intelligent power modules are generally used in electric cars and other electric motor controllers, appliances, electroplating machinery, power supplies, battery chargers, medical equipment, inverters, range of other equipment. The growing requirement for electricity in developing nations is fueling the demand for renewable energy production. As intelligent power modules are vital components in solar inverters, micro-inverters, and wind turbine inverters, their use may increase due to the heightened demand. Moreover, governments worldwide are promoting the usage of clean energy vehicles, including alternative fuel, plug-in hybrid, and Electric Vehicles (EVs), where IPMs are widely used in various components, such as AC compressors, oil pumps, and onboard charging units.

For instance, in 2019, under the "Environment Bonus" program, the German government and automakers increased cash incentives for battery-powered vehicles. These efforts are aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions and preserving the environment. As a result, the growth of the EV industry is expected to support the expansion of the IPM market. Moreover, in January 2023, Renesas Electronics Corporation announced the launch of an automotive intelligent power device. The device addresses the requirements of next-generation electrical and electronic architectures.

North America is the largest market for electric vehicles; as electric vehicles use IPM for efficient functioning, and the region is anticipated to dominate the IPM industry. Additionally, Japan is another leading region for the IPM market, as it has the presence of various IPM manufacturing companies such as Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., Renesas Electronics Corporation, and more.
